Who usually pays for non-medical home care?
Private pay
Many families pay directly using income, savings, retirement funds or family contributions. Private pay often provides flexibility in selecting the schedule and type of support.
Long-term care insurance
Coverage depends on the policy. Ask about elimination periods, daily or monthly benefit limits, covered services, provider requirements, documentation and reimbursement procedures.
Medicare
Medicare may cover certain skilled home health services when a person qualifies. It usually does not pay for ongoing non-medical home care when help with daily activities is the only need.
Medi-Cal and IHSS
California’s IHSS program may provide in-home assistance to eligible aged, blind and disabled individuals. County assessment, authorization, provider rules and benefit limits apply.
